Drawings from Spring 2011

Finally got around to editing these drawings from Spring Session 2011, our ACM workshop with Jon Gomez. Only like 6 months later! Time flies when you’re in two stage shows and in school full time I guess!

Tree of life

tree-of-life

Trees are the ultimate recycling machines.

After undergoing the last few months of rehearsals for IONA’s evening-length dance production Destiny I have emerged a stronger more confident individual. The show was not a linear story, but revolved around the connection of humanity to the universe. Our universe functions much like a tree emerging out from one central point or seed. A tree’s roots dig deep into the soil, it’s branches reach up to the sky a mirror onto itself. A tree takes in chlorophyll and releases oxygen, the opposite of how we breathe. If you think about it, we should have one tree planted for each new child born to create proper balance.

We dump our waste into fresh clean water, treat it with chemicals then release it out into our oceans. We “take the fertile out of the fertilizer,” To quote Captain Holly Short, a fairy character from Eoin Colfer’s book Artemis Fowl. Fresh clean water is a finite resource, so just as we must recycle our bottles, cans and paper we must find a way to recycle our personal body waste. We have lost our connection to nature so much that we have severed ourselves from the ecological system. Our Mother, planet Earth needs us to re-enter the cycle of life instead of creating new cycles of death.
